Ivy's Review
Flunked by Jen Calonita follows a young thief named Gillian "Gilly" Cobbler as she navigates Fairy Tale Reform School (FRTS). After getting three offenses for thieving for her family, Gilly is sent to Fairy Tale Reform School, where she meets and becomes fast friends with, Kayla, her roommate, and Jax, the kid she helped get out of trouble after he tried to escape. Fairy Tale Reform School is a school taught by former, reformed villains to prevent children criminals from becoming storybook villains. Along the way, Gilly meets friends...and foes. Well, one foe in particular. Jocelyn. The sister of the reformed Evil Queen from Snow White. Gilly enters school suspicious of her teachers' true intensions, and as she settles into school, her suspicious are validated when she uncovers clues pointing to a sinister, underground plot targeting the royal kingdom of her home, Enchantasia. Alongside her friends, Gilly must brave high-stakes magical mysteries, strict school rules, and uncertain loyalties to uncover the truth before the kingdom's peace is shattered forever. But one of Gilly's friends is acting absent and scared. Is Gilly reading too much into it, or is something bad happening? Caught in a web of lies where the line between good and evil is blurred, she is forced to decide who she can trust when her entire home is on the line. This thrilling adventure sets the stage for a high-risk battle of wits that will change the fate of Enchantasia forever.
This book got a 4 out of 5, technically a 4.07 out of 5 because I liked it, but it was kind of slow and the ending was kind of obvious. The betrayal and then betrayal of the betrayal and then betrayal of the betrayal of the betrayal was REALLY confusing and lowered my rating a lot. I liked the story and the theme of unlikely heroes saving the day (even if it is quite repetitive across many stories) but Flunked wasn't great. I still want to read the rest of the series, though!
If you like reform stories, underdog stories, stories with fairytale elements in it, or a combination of some of those, you might like Flunked and the rest of series. Bye!
